Frida Venus de Virus, 2021, Glass and ceramic tile

While Frida Kahlo deals with broken bones and broken dreams, Venus dreams of better days. The subject of the challenges of womanhood are subtly explored through elements in Frida’s life that often left her figuratively and physically broken. Her gusto and passion was countered by lengthy hospital stays, polio, abortions, and failed pregnancies. She created a public identity and artistic expression through fantasy and imagination all while defying male dominance in a highly charged political climate and changing world.

Venus has lost her arms! She is powerless to make change and cure the world. She is the Goddess of Love, but it all seems to be out of reach for the moment. Her arms are close by, she just needs to look around her. There is always hope!

Why, Mama?, 2023

How does a mother explain to her son that being a little black boy is not the same as being a black man? Somewhere, sometime, he must let go of her skirts and the joyful innocence of childhood, to be replaced by the heavy weight and worry of prejudice and punishment. Why?

About the Artist

Carol’s art isn’t a business—it’s a reflection of what she loves and believes. A life shaped by movement, memory, and the many places she has called home finds its way into every mosaic. As part of lifelong Air Force families, Carol has lived around the world and around the country, settling in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1996 with her husband Greg. Her travels and experiences continue to inspire the bright, folkloric, and unmistakably original work she is known for.

In her Snell Isle studio, her pieces come together thoughtfully, bringing color, pattern, and story together. Her materials sometimes arrive through the generosity of neighbors, who save bits of glass, broken plates, and old teacups for her next creation. Each fragment carries its own history; in her hands, those pieces become part of something vibrant and new.

Her mosaics reflect a lifetime of looking closely, moving through the world, and finding beauty in unexpected places. Every work is an invitation to pause, notice the details, and discover how separate pieces can come together in a joyful whole.
